With the AirTag 2, Apple has introduced its first update to its standalone tracking device. Since the launch of the original AirTag, the small accessory has become an integral part of the Apple ecosystem. It reliably locates keys, backpacks, and other everyday items. Expectations for the second generation were correspondingly high. The AirTag 2 brings measurable improvements, but also clearly shows where Apple has deliberately left things unchanged.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question of whether upgrading to the AirTag 2 is worthwhile cannot be answered definitively. Apple isn't pursuing a radical overhaul with the new model, but rather focusing on targeted optimizations. Those already using multiple AirTags need to weigh up whether the new features justify the upgrade. Both technological advancements and missed opportunities play a role in this decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improvements to the AirTag 2<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The AirTag 2 offers significant updates, particularly on the technical side. Precision finding has been further improved and is more accurate than its predecessor. This is especially noticeable indoors or in densely populated areas. Additionally, the Bluetooth range has been increased, allowing lost items to be detected from a greater distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The integrated speaker has also been improved. It's now louder than the first AirTag, making it easier to locate by sound, for example in noisy environments or when the AirTag is hidden under objects. These changes may seem minor at first glance, but in everyday use, they are precisely the factors that determine whether you can quickly find the AirTag or spend more time searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important aspect concerns the casing. The AirTag 2 has exactly the same dimensions as the original. This means all existing accessories remain compatible. Keychains, bag holders, and special mounts can still be used. This is noteworthy because Apple often makes small changes to the form factor of other products, requiring new accessories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, the AirTag and AirTag 2 are physically very similar<\/a>. The only noticeable difference is on the back, where the printed text is slightly different. This difference is so minor that when buying from third-party sellers, you literally have to read the fine print to identify the correct model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What's disappointing about AirTag 2<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Despite the improvements, one key criticism remains. The AirTag 2 still lacks an integrated hole for direct attachment to a keyring. Those wishing to use the AirTag on their keychain will still need an additional accessory. While functional, this solution is unnecessarily cumbersome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While very inexpensive third-party mounts exist, even these make the AirTag larger and bulkier than a direct attachment would require. This very change has been one of the most frequently requested improvements since the first generation, yet it has once again not been implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, Apple is sticking with the familiar round form factor. No new approach, such as a flatter design or integration into other everyday objects, has been pursued. Especially given that traditional wallets and cards are increasingly being replaced by digital solutions, there would have been room for innovation here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One conceivable scenario would have been an accessory similar to a MagSafe wallet with an integrated "Find My" function. Since such wallets can occasionally detach from the iPhone, built-in tracking would offer real added value. However, the AirTag 2 sticks to the familiar concept and does not utilize this feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
