WhatsApp is preparing a new feature designed to make it easier to join existing group chats. In a current beta version, group members can choose whether to share part of the existing chat history with newly added people. The feature is currently being tested by selected users and is expected to be officially released soon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lack of access to previous messages has been a frequent criticism of WhatsApp groups for years. New members often join ongoing discussions and have no overview of important agreements, appointments, or shared information. Other messaging platforms already offer this feature. WhatsApp is now catching up and testing a solution that is intended to be flexible, transparent, and secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WhatsApp rolls out new feature to beta testers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As WABetaInfo reports<\/a>, Meta has released a new WhatsApp beta via TestFlight. This beta includes, for the first time, a feature that allows users to selectively share their recent chat history with new group members. Currently, this feature is only available to a limited group of beta testers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up to 100 of the most recent messages from a group chat can be shared, provided they were sent within the last 14 days. Older messages remain excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is how sharing chat history works<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The process is linked to adding new group members. When a new member is added via the group chat's info screen, an additional option may appear at the bottom of the screen. This allows you to share all or part of the recent chat history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WhatsApp doesn't force users to select the maximum number of messages. Fewer than 100 messages can be selected if only specific content is relevant. This ensures that users retain full control over the amount of information shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visual markings for better overview<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Messages shared via this feature are clearly marked for new group members. They appear in a different color than regular chat messages. This makes it immediately clear which content was shared later and not created live in the chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This visual highlighting is intended to help maintain an overview and avoid misunderstandings, especially in active or thematically complex groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transparency for all group members<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Because sharing chat histories can be sensitive, WhatsApp places great emphasis on transparency. As soon as messages are shared with a new member, a notification automatically appears in the group chat. This indicates who has shared the chat history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This way, all parties involved know that content has been shared, and by whom. Silent or unnoticed sharing of messages is therefore impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security and end-to-end encryption are maintained<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Even with this new feature, WhatsApp remains true to its security concept. The sharing process uses the messages and encryption key directly on the device of the person adding the new member. The shared messages are again protected by end-to-end encryption and are securely transmitted to the new group member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ensures that WhatsApp provides the same level of protection for content subsequently released as for regular chats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No official launch date yet<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As with many WhatsApp beta features, there is currently no firm timeline for the wide release. However, it is known that the feature is being tested not only on iOS but also on Android. This suggests that WhatsApp is preparing for a cross-platform rollout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the advanced stage of testing, it is likely that the feature will be made available to all users in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its new group feature, WhatsApp is responding to a long-standing request from many users.
