Apple has begun actively reminding users of an upcoming mandatory upgrade for the Home app. This is due to the final end of support for the old Apple Home architecture. Those who do not perform the update in time, or are technically unable to do so, should expect significant limitations starting in February 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple introduced a new architecture for Apple Home in late 2022 and early 2023. The goal was to make the platform more powerful, stable, and compatible. However, the initial rollout was problematic. Due to bugs and outages, Apple withdrew the upgrade at short notice and only made it available again later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, an old and a new Home architecture have existed in parallel. This transitional solution is now coming to an end. Apple has been preparing to phase out the old version for some time and is now increasing the pressure on users who have not yet updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple is sticking to its decision to shut down the old Home architecture<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Originally, support for the earlier version of Apple Home was scheduled to end in fall 2025. In early November, Apple officially postponed this deadline. The new date is February 10, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple is now sending out reminder emails to affected users again. The message explicitly states that this is the second reminder. Support for the old version ends next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don't update to the new version of Apple Home, access to your home in the Home app may be restricted or completely blocked. Accessory devices might no longer function reliably, and automations may behave unpredictably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, important security fixes and performance improvements will be discontinued, as Apple will only provide these for the new Home architecture. The old version will no longer be supported after the cutoff date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New features through the updated Apple Home version<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The upgrade to the new architecture also unlocks additional features. These include guest access for the smart home, support for robotic vacuum cleaners, a detailed activity history, and further improvements to automation and overall system stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The update can be performed directly in the Home app. In the Home settings, you'll find the "Software Update" section. If it indicates that this home and all accessories are up to date, the new architecture is already active and no further steps are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This primarily affects users who rely on older iPhones, iPads, or other devices as the central hub for their smart home. This limitation has been the subject of criticism since the announcement and is a major reason why many have postponed the upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final end for the old Apple Home architecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Apple has made it clear that the transition period is ending. The old Home architecture will be permanently shut down on February 10, 2026.
