According to the Financial Times<\/a>, the British government plans to officially request that Apple and Google protect children from taking, sharing, and viewing nude photos. Specifically, algorithms for detecting nudity are to be integrated directly into the operating systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These algorithms are designed to prevent photos or images of genitals from being taken or shared unless it is clearly established that the user is of legal age. Furthermore, the British Home Office wants to ensure that operating systems do not display nudity on screen at all until age verification has been provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possible methods for age verification include biometric checks or official identification documents. The report suggests that this is initially a political request and not a legal requirement. An official announcement is expected in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has already implemented safeguards, particularly within the Messages app. If a child is part of an iCloud family group and receives a sexually explicit image, it will initially be blurred.
