Apple is facing a potential shift in its chip strategy. While its M-series chips have so far been manufactured entirely by TSMC, a recent report suggests that Intel could join as an additional supplier starting in 2027. The information comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been considered a reliable source for developments within Apple for years. For Apple, this move would represent a significant expansion of its supply chain and simultaneously send a signal to US policymakers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the introduction of Apple Silicon, Apple has relied on a close collaboration with TSMC. The chips for iPhone, iPad, and Mac are all manufactured in the Taiwanese company's state-of-the-art production facilities. Despite this successful partnership, Apple is apparently working behind the scenes on diversification. Intel's potential investment primarily concerns upcoming M-series chips and could establish a second manufacturing source in the long term, without replacing TSMC as its main partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple could integrate Intel into its M-series starting in 2027.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

According to Kuo<\/a>, Apple plans to commission Intel to manufacture an M-series processor for the first time starting in 2027. Specifically, this refers to the standard M-series chip, such as the M5. This does not include the more powerful models like the M5 Pro, M5 Max, or M5 Ultra. These will continue to be manufactured exclusively by TSMC, as will the high-volume chips for iPhones like the A19 and A19 Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kuo suggests that Intel could potentially ship the first entry-level M-series processors between the second and third quarters of 2027. However, final confirmation depends on further progress in Intel's process development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Progress on Intel's 18AP node and Apple's preparations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Apple has already signed a non-disclosure agreement with Intel and gained access to the Advanced Node 18AP PDK version 0.9.1GA. According to Kuo, key simulations and research, such as PPA, are progressing as expected. Apple is now awaiting PDK versions 1.0 and 1.1, which are scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2026. Only with this more final development documentation can it be assessed whether a 2027 production launch remains realistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kuo also describes how Intel might not limit itself to the M5. Should the process be successful, entry into later chips like the M7 would be conceivable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diversification remains an important factor for Apple.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Kuo cites two reasons why Apple considers this move sensible. First, it demonstrates that Apple's chip strategy aligns with the current US administration's "Made in USA" policy. Second, it establishes a second source for Apple's own chip manufacturing. Even though TSMC will likely remain a leader in advanced manufacturing processes for the foreseeable future, it is important for Apple to mitigate supply chain management risks and avoid relying solely on a single partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New dynamic between Apple, TSMC and Intel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The current indications paint a clear picture. TSMC will remain Apple's primary partner for high-end chips for the foreseeable future, but Intel could assume a role in the production of the M-series for the first time starting in 2027. Preparations are already underway and now depend on how quickly Intel releases the final PDK versions and how stable the 18AP node is.
