Parental controls on iPhones and iPads play a crucial role in ensuring safe, age-appropriate, and controlled device use. Screen Time features, combined with Family Sharing, provide clarity on what content is available, how long a device is used, and what data remains protected. The wide range of settings allows for flexible customization of a child's device to their age, maturity, and usage patterns.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parental controls are an integral part of the Apple ecosystem, connecting devices, settings, and family accounts. They are managed through Screen Time and require Family Sharing to be set up and the child's account to be part of the group. Once restrictions are activated, numerous options become available to regulate access to apps, purchases, media, privacy, web content, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activate parental controls and screen time basics<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Setup begins in the Settings app under Screen Time. There, the child's account and restrictions are selected. After entering the Screen Time passcode, the restrictions are activated. Deactivating them later temporarily overrides the parental controls without deleting any saved settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure parental controls work synchronously across all devices in the Family Sharing network, iPhones, iPads, and Macs should be running the latest software version. Depending on the child's age, some protection features are enabled by default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Screen Time features can be used even without restrictions enabled. These include screen distance to protect your eyes, communication limits for contacts, and communication security to detect inappropriate photos and videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purchases are controlled via the screen time settings of the child's profile. Under iTunes and App Store purchases, you can specify whether apps can be installed or deleted and whether in-app purchases are allowed. Starting with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, it's possible to request exceptions. Children can submit a request if they want to perform an action blocked by limits. The request appears on the supervisor's device and can be accepted or denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In countries or regions with alternative app providers, there are additional settings options for app installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Integrated apps and features allow<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Integrated Apple apps can be individually disabled. This is done via Allowed Apps and Features. Disabled apps are not deleted, but temporarily disappear from the Home screen.
