The next step in Apple's chip strategy is just around the corner. The M5 chip is almost complete and will form the basis for the next generation of Macs. The question is less if it will arrive, but rather when the first devices with the new technology will appear. Reports and leaks already paint a pretty clear picture of Apple's timeline for the M5 Mac.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since introducing the first M1 chip, Apple has completely transformed the Mac landscape. With each generation, performance has increased while energy efficiency has improved. The M4 chip, currently used in the iPad Pro and MacBook Air, was only an interim step. Now, all eyes are on the M5. Rumors and insider information paint a scenario where the coming months will be exciting\u2014not only for iPads and Vision Pro, but especially for the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and possibly other models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presentation of the M5 chip expected in October<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Apple is expected to unveil the M5 chip in October. Whether this will happen at a dedicated event or spread across several consecutive product launches remains to be seen. It's clear that the chip won't necessarily land in the Mac first. With the M4, Apple already decided to use the chip in the iPad Pro first. Insiders expect Apple to follow the same path this time: A new iPad Pro with the M5 is considered the most likely first device. There's also speculation that a future version of the Vision Pro could also be directly equipped with the M5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First M5 Macs: MacBook Pro could be the first<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The MacBook Pro is traditionally one of the first devices to receive a new chip. Many observers expected new models with the M5 to appear as early as fall 2025. However, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the launch of the M5 MacBook Pro series will be delayed. Instead of the end of 2025, the market launch is now scheduled for early 2026. The familiar 14-inch and 16-inch sizes are planned, with an unchanged design. As with previous generations, there will be three variants: the M5, the M5 Pro, and the M5 Max.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M5 MacBook Air follows in early 2026<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The MacBook Air will also launch in early 2026. A February or March launch window is expected, similar to the M4 MacBook Air introduced earlier this year. Apple will also stick with the familiar design and offer the Air in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, other models could also be upgraded to the M5. The Mac mini and iMac, in particular, are considered prime candidates for an update in late 2025 or early 2026. So far, however, most information has focused on the laptop lineup, so it remains unclear when exactly the desktop models will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The M5 Mac marks the next important development step in Apple's chip strategy. While the chip itself will be officially unveiled in October 2025, the Macs will take a bit longer. The MacBook Pro with M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max are planned for early 2026, as is the M5 MacBook Air. Those hoping for new iPads or a Vision Pro with M5 might find something earlier, however. One thing is clear: the launch of the M5 generation will significantly shape Apple's portfolio from 2026 onwards.
