With the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new iPhone Air, Apple has launched its next generation of smartphones. Officially available since Friday, the devices feature, among other things, the newly developed N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7. Initial user feedback, however, shows that the new technology offers more than just advantages. Issues are emerging, particularly with Wi-Fi, which are already generating much discussion in forums and support communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The iPhone 17 is considered one of the biggest advancements in recent years. For the first time, Apple is using its own chip for wireless connections, taking performance in areas like Bluetooth, AirDrop, and Personal Hotspot to a new level. However, the new lineup is already facing criticism shortly after its launch: More and more users are reporting temporary Wi-Fi outages. These interruptions not only affect web browsing but also CarPlay in the car and, in some cases, use in combination with the Apple Watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First problems after the launch<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Since its launch on Friday, reports of unstable Wi-Fi connections have been piling up on Reddit<\/a> and in the Apple Support Community<\/a> . All four models are affected: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. The outages are generally similar. The connection drops briefly and is only restored when the iPhone is unlocked. The dropouts are particularly noticeable when used with Apple CarPlay. Because CarPlay relies on a stable connection, interruptions also occur in the vehicle. Hundreds of comments in recent days make it clear that the problem is not isolated, even though no figures on its actual prevalence are yet available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possible triggers and the influence of the Apple Watch<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Some affected users report that Wi-Fi drops frequently occur when wearing a paired and unlocked Apple Watch at the same time. Whether this is a key factor remains unclear, however. There is no confirmation so far that the smartwatch is directly related to the issues. At the center of the discussion is the new N1 chip. Apple is using it for the first time in all iPhone 17 models, replacing the previously used Broadcom chips. The N1 is responsible for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The N1 chip in focus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Apple highlighted the advantages of the N1 in advance. In a CNBC interview,<\/a> Arun Mathias, Vice President of Wireless Software Technologies, particularly emphasized its energy efficiency. Wi-Fi can be used to determine location data without having to turn on GPS. This saves energy because the main processor needs to be activated less frequently. Press releases also stated that the chip makes AirDrop and Personal Hotspot faster and more reliable. However, initial user experiences show that Wi-Fi stability doesn't meet expectations in all situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uncertainty about hardware or software<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It's not yet clear whether this is a hardware or software issue. Apple hasn't yet issued a statement. We were unable to reproduce the connection drops. We're hoping for an upcoming update. iOS 26.0.1 is expected to be released soon. Whether Apple has already integrated a solution into it is unknown.
