At 5.6 millimeters thick, the iPhone Air is the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever introduced. It's the first major redesign in years and features technical changes Apple hasn't implemented before. iFixit has disassembled the new model piece by piece and documented exactly what tricks Apple uses to combine such a slim smartphone with the latest technology and excellent repairability.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The iPhone Air marks a significant step in the iPhone lineup. Apple relies on a new internal design, sophisticated materials, and a clever component layout. The iFixit teardown details Apple's approach: from the placement of the motherboard to the construction of the titanium frame and the modular USB-C port. At the same time, it's clear that Apple is paying more attention to repairability than in previous generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultra-slim housing with camera plateau<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

To accommodate all of the components in a case that's just 5.6 millimeters thin, Apple developed a so-called plateau for the camera. The main circuit board sits partially in this raised area, creating additional space for the battery. The battery is large, encased in metal, and benefits from this special arrangement. At the same time, this position protects the main circuit board from stress caused by potential bending. Tests have shown that the iPhone Air's titanium frame is extremely strong and hardly bends. However, iFixit found that the frame appears less resilient without installed components. It was easy to bend because Apple had integrated plastic gaps in some places to prevent cellular interference. Whether these spots represent a long-term weak point remains unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Battery in iPhone Air and MagSafe pack identical<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

One notable discovery concerns the battery. iFixit had previously suspected<\/a> that Apple was using the same battery in the MagSafe battery pack as in the iPhone Air. The teardown confirms this. Both batteries are identical, have a capacity of 12.26 watt-hours, and are easily replaceable. This means that the battery in the MagSafe pack could theoretically be used directly in the iPhone Air\u2014an unusual but practical approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easier repair thanks to well-thought-out design<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Despite its extremely thin casing, the iPhone Air is easier to repair than it appears at first glance. The display is clipped in, the glass back is easier to remove, and the battery is attached with a low-current adhesive. This technology was first introduced with the iPhone 16 and is now also implemented in the Air. Apple is also reducing software locks and restrictions on pairing spare parts. At the same time, spare parts and repair manuals are provided. Therefore, iFixit rates the iPhone Air's repairability 7 out of 10. The battery and display, in particular, are comparatively easy to replace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3D-printed USB-C connector<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Apple 3D-prints the iPhone Air's USB-C port from a titanium alloy. While not as scratch-resistant as the titanium frame itself, it's sturdy enough for everyday use. The port is modular, adhesive-bonded, and can be replaced as needed. This increases the device's longevity, as the entire smartphone doesn't have to be replaced if the port becomes damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Apple chips in use<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The motherboard houses a combination of specially developed Apple chips. These include the A19 Pro as the main processor, the N1 network chip, and the new C1X 5G modem. While other models in the iPhone 17 series also feature the A19 and N1, the Air is the first iPhone to use Apple's own 5G modem. This marks Apple's departure from Qualcomm and a greater focus on its own hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
