Apple has released the second beta version of iOS 18.6 and the other system updates. These include iPadOS 18.6, macOS 15.6, watchOS 11.6, tvOS 18.6, and visionOS 2.6. The new builds are now available to registered developers through the Apple Developer Program. The public test version is expected to follow\u2014as usual\u2014in the coming days.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with the first beta, the focus of the 18.6 updates is clearly on system maintenance. Major new features have not yet been documented\u2014which is not surprising: The next major software generation, centered around iOS 26, is already being tested in parallel and will be released this fall. iOS 18.6 closes the gap until then, primarily bringing technical and regulatory adjustments. This time, there are noticeable changes for users within the EU. Apple has revised the app installation process\u2014in direct response to new regulations from Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

App installations outside the App Store are becoming easier<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6 are changing how apps are installed from the internet or alternative marketplaces. Apple is removing many of the previous hurdles: The conspicuous warnings and cumbersome steps that previously prevented users from downloading apps outside of the App Store have been alleviated. Instead, Apple is focusing on transparency through a two-step installation process. The first time an app is downloaded from a specific developer, users are informed of all relevant details \u2013 including the publisher, feature set, and app behavior. This disclosure is no longer required for all subsequent downloads from the same developer. This means that the process will resemble the usual procedure in the App Store in the future, while remaining transparent and secure. This applies not only to individual apps, but also to entire app marketplaces that can be installed via the web. This will also be regulated more simply and clearly \u2013 exclusively within the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New API planned for developers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Apple also announced<\/a> a new API that will allow developers to initiate the download of additional applications from alternative sources directly from their apps. The goal is to map the entire process surrounding web distribution, alternative stores, and proprietary platforms in a technically clean manner \u2013 without any detours for the user. However, these new options are only available if the app and the user are located within the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No further changes known<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Aside from the revised installation logic, no other new features have been documented. Apple hasn't communicated any new features, design tweaks, or other changes in the second beta of iOS 18.6 or the other systems. The possible introduction of Apple Intelligence in China also remains a rumor for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
