For years, creating a custom ringtone on the iPhone was a test of patience: iTunes synchronization, GarageBand export, format conversion. Since iOS 26, all this workaround is gone. A suitable audio file is all you need; the rest happens directly on the device \u2013 in under a minute.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With iOS 26, Apple expanded iPhone personalization in many areas \u2013 from new features on the lock screen<\/a> to ringtones. The latter, in particular, had long been a sore point: without third-party software or the paid purchase of pre-made tones, practically nothing was possible. This has fundamentally changed. Any local MP3 or M4A file can now be set as the ringtone with just a few taps, entirely without GarageBand. The following explains how this works step by step, what formats and lengths the system accepts, and how to manage your own ringtones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set up a ringtone directly via the Files app<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The quickest way is via the Files app. This requires an audio file in MP3 or M4A format that is no longer than 30 seconds. The system rejects longer files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open the Files app and navigate to the desired audio file. Tap it to open the preview and select the Share button at the bottom. Alternatively, press and hold the file until the context menu appears, then tap Share. In the Share menu, scroll down, tap More if necessary, and then select Use as ringtone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system then automatically imports the file and opens the settings directly under "Sounds & Haptics" in the "Ringtone" section. The new tone is already at the top of the list and can be immediately activated as the default ringtone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voice memos and other apps also work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The "Use as ringtone" option appears not only in the Files app, but also in certain other applications \u2013 including Voice Memos. This allows you to turn your own recordings into ringtones directly: Record a short voice memo, open the share menu, and select the same option. There's no need to convert or trim the audio in a separate app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Length and format: What the iPhone accepts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Two limitations are crucial. First, the format: MP3 and M4A files are supported. If the "Use as ringtone" option doesn't appear, it's usually due to an unsupported format or a corrupted file. Second, the length: a maximum of 30 seconds. The system strictly enforces this limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important to know: There is no built-in editing function. Anyone wanting to use a three-minute song must first trim it to a 30-second clip \u2013 for example, using a trimming app from the App Store or on a Mac. The iPhone itself does not offer this option during import.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manage and delete your own ringtones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once imported, ringtones remain permanently in the list \u2013 even if the original source file is later deleted from the Files app. The tone is saved independently from the moment of import.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To remove a ringtone, go to "Settings" > "Sounds & Haptics" > "Ringtone", swipe the entry to the left, and tap "Delete". The ringtone will then disappear from the selection, but the original file remains unaffected. This helps keep the list clean without accidentally losing your own audio files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assign individual tones to individual contacts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A custom ringtone doesn't have to apply to all calls. In the Contacts app, you can assign a unique ringtone to a single person: Open the contact, tap "Edit" in the top right corner, select "Ringtone," and choose your desired sound. Confirm by tapping "Done" in the top right corner. This way, you can tell who's calling just by the sound \u2013 handy for close contacts, without having to look at the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Apple Music isn't working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One limitation remains: Songs from Apple Music cannot be used as ringtones \u2013 even with an active subscription. This is due to the copy protection of this content, which the system cannot bypass. Therefore, only local files that are not subject to this restriction, such as your own recordings or self-created clips, are suitable as ringtones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purchased ringtones: still possible, but hardly necessary anymore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The option to purchase pre-made 30-second ringtones is still technically available on the iPhone. However, given the ability to create your own ringtones for free in seconds, this method seems outdated. For most users, the direct access via the Files app should completely replace the need to purchase ringtones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If "Use as ringtone" does not appear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the option doesn't appear in the share menu, a quick check of two things will help: Is the file actually in MP3 or M4A format? Other formats are not accepted and can be converted beforehand using a converter. And is the file no longer than 30 seconds? Files that are too long or corrupted will be rejected with a corresponding message. If both of these conditions are met, the option will reliably appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last remaining hurdle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Only one real limitation remains: The iPhone doesn't trim audio files itself. A longer song still needs to be cut into its 30-second segment using a separate app before importing \u2013 this is precisely the one step Apple is still missing to completely integrate the process into the device. For everything else, the built-in features are now sufficient, and using GarageBand or iTunes is only worthwhile if a sound actually needs to be trimmed or mixed from multiple tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
