Then something could soon change for you as an iPhone user in Europe. Apple is at loggerheads with the European Union \u2013 once again. This time, the dispute is so serious that features like AirDrop could disappear entirely. And not because they&#039;re technically impossible, but for political reasons.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple is appealing a key provision of the EU&#039;s Digital Markets Act (DMA). This requires large tech companies to make certain features available to third-party providers. The EU aims to increase competition. Apple, on the other hand, sees this as a threat to user experience and security \u2013 and is considering simply disabling certain features in Europe instead of enabling them. AirDrop is at the top of the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-worum-geht-es-beim-streit\">What is the argument about?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Digital Markets Act defines certain companies as so-called gatekeepers. Apple falls into this category \u2013 simply because of the reach of iOS and the popularity of the iPhone. According to the DMA, Apple must, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make interfaces like AirDrop accessible to third parties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable features such as automatic connection of AirPods from other manufacturers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potentially open iPhone screen mirroring to non-Apple devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU argues that Apple is exploiting its market power by restricting these features. Apple, however, counters that the close integration of hardware and software is precisely what defines its products\u2014and that&#039;s exactly what users expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-apples-reaktion-ruckzug-statt-offnung\">Apple&#039;s reaction: retreat instead of opening<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Since negotiations with the EU have apparently failed, Apple has officially appealed. In a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/2025\/06\/apple_appeals_eu_interop_requirements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">highlighted<\/a> by blogger John Gruber, it is stated that these EU regulations would severely restrict the company&#039;s innovative power in Europe. If Apple is forced to open up key functions, these functions could be completely lost to European users. One example of this is already apparent: iPhone mirroring was not introduced in the EU because Apple would then be forced to also enable Android mirroring. A similar scenario is conceivable for AirDrop. The logic: If you are no longer allowed to offer something exclusively, it is better not to release it at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-was-bedeutet-das-fur-dich\">What does this mean for you?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If Apple actually decides to remove AirDrop in Europe, it would be a clear disadvantage for users here. And this is being done through a law that is supposed to ensure greater fairness. Experience shows that Apple does not hesitate to limit features regionally when it comes to the integrity of its own system. It is understandable that a company like Apple does not want to open up its technology arbitrarily \u2013 especially when security and the user experience could suffer as a result. The demand to release highly integrated functions to any third-party provider may seem sensible from the perspective of competition authorities. This time, too, it doesn&#039;t look as if the company will bow to a regulation it considers wrong. The fact that AirDrop could be affected is not an idle threat. It&#039;s an option that&#039;s on the table. The EU wants more openness. Apple wants to retain control over its own system. Which of the two ultimately has the better arguments remains to be seen \u2013 but the idea that Apple should open up key functions to third parties across the board seems excessive in some respects. On paper, it&#039;s about competition. In practice, however, it&#039;s also about how much influence Apple can retain over its own platform \u2013 and whether users in Europe will have to make do with fewer features in the future, even though the technology has long been available. Whether AirDrop will actually be abolished in the EU is still unclear. But the fact that Apple is considering this option isn&#039;t a PR stunt \u2013 it&#039;s an expression of a clear stance.
