This works wirelessly via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and since iOS 17, even over the internet when the devices are far apart. Many people are familiar with AirDrop, but don&#039;t use it properly or don&#039;t utilize its full potential. Here are six tips on how to set up and use AirDrop efficiently with your iPhone \u2013 without unnecessary detours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AirDrop is one of the most convenient features in the Apple ecosystem. No need to write emails, open messaging apps, or search for cables\u2014just select, share, and you&#039;re done. Apple has made some changes with iOS 17: The visibility settings have already been revised, the Control Center interface has been modernized, and there&#039;s now the option to resume interrupted transfers over the internet. To ensure everything works smoothly, you should know the correct settings and avoid common sources of error. This article is about exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-airdrop-aktivieren-und-sichtbarkeit-einstellen\">Enable AirDrop and set visibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can turn on AirDrop via the Control Center. On your iPhone, swipe down from the top right of the screen. Press and hold the area with the network icons (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode) until you see the AirDrop button. Tap it and select one of the three options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Reception off:<\/strong> Your iPhone is not visible to anyone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Contacts only:<\/strong> Only people in your contacts can send you something.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Everyone for 10 minutes:<\/strong> Your device is visible to everyone nearby \u2013 but only for 10 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The &quot;10 Minutes&quot; option replaces the previous permanent open option for everyone since iOS 16.2. This is useful if you only want to receive something briefly but don&#039;t want to be disturbed again afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kontakte-richtig-konfigurieren\">Configure contacts correctly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you use &quot;Contacts Only,&quot; your contacts must be set up correctly for AirDrop to work. It&#039;s important that you and the recipient both have the Apple account email address or phone number saved in their contacts that is also used for iCloud. You can check this in the Contacts app. If only the name is entered but no linked Apple ID, AirDrop won&#039;t be able to connect\u2014even if you&#039;re within range. Simply saving someone by name isn&#039;t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reichweite-und-bedingungen-fur-eine-stabile-verbindung\">Range and conditions for a stable connection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AirDrop uses Bluetooth to search for devices and Wi-Fi for the actual file transfer. Both wireless connections must be enabled on both devices. For a stable connection, the devices should be within 10 meters of each other. Your iPhone must also be unlocked and the display turned on. If your iPhone is in sleep mode, your device may not appear for others. Thick walls, metal surfaces, or other sources of interference, such as strong Wi-Fi networks, can also affect the connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Since iOS 17, there&#039;s an important new feature:<\/strong> If you send a file via AirDrop and move away from the other device, the transfer will automatically continue over the internet. This requires that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>both devices are connected to the same Apple ID or to iCloud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the &quot;Use mobile data&quot; option for AirDrop is enabled on both devices (Settings &gt; General &gt; AirDrop)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobile network or Wi-Fi is active<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes AirDrop much more flexible, even when you&#039;re on the go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-empfang-gezielt-einschranken\">Targeted restriction of reception<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don&#039;t want to be disturbed\u2014for example, at the movies, at the office, or simply in peace and quiet\u2014you can quickly limit AirDrop reception. You can switch to &quot;Reception off&quot; or &quot;Contacts only&quot; at any time in the Control Center. &quot;Everyone for 10 minutes&quot; is suitable if you only want to receive something once, such as when meeting someone you haven&#039;t saved as a contact.
