Getting things back in order isn&#039;t difficult. In this article, I&#039;ll show you five effective ways to free up storage space on your MacBook SSD \u2013 easily, safely, and directly using macOS tools.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While macOS is pretty good at managing storage in the background, it&#039;s not entirely automatic. Old files, unused programs, or caches accumulate over time and take up valuable SSD capacity. Especially with smaller SSDs like 128 or 256 GB, simply deleting a few files is often not enough. You need a systematic approach\u2014and that&#039;s exactly what you get here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grosse-dateien-mit-dem-finder-suchen-und-loschen\">Search and delete large files with Finder<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Current macOS versions like Ventura or Sonoma support detailed file searches directly in the Finder. This lets you quickly locate large storage hogs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the Finder and navigate to the Applications menu item<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press Command (\u2318) + F to start the search function<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select \u201cThis Mac\u201d at the top to search the entire system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the first drop-down menu and select \u201cOther\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search for \u201cFile size\u201d, activate the box and confirm with \u201cOK\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the condition to \u201cis greater than\u201d and enter, for example, \u201c500 MB\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#039;ll now see all files that exceed this size. Review the list, delete unnecessary files, and then empty the Recycle Bin to truly free up space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-speicherverwaltung-in-den-systemeinstellungen-nutzen\">Use memory management in the system settings<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>macOS offers its own storage overview that lets you quickly see what&#039;s eating up space:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click the Apple menu (\uf8ff) in the top left corner and select \u201cSystem Preferences\u201d or open the Settings app<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to General &gt; Storage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wait a moment until the analysis is completed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can now see how much storage is being used by apps, documents, photos, system preferences, and more. Under &quot;Documents,&quot; you can view and delete large files. The &quot;Optimize Mac Storage&quot; option is also located here \u2013 it also helps you automatically move unused files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unnotige-programme-deinstallieren\">Uninstall unnecessary programs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You should delete programs you no longer use. Here&#039;s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the Applications folder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drag unused apps to the trash<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also check for any data left over after uninstalling. To do so, open &quot;Go &gt; Go to Folder&quot; in Finder and check these paths:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>~\/Library\/Application Support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>~\/Library\/Caches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>~\/Library\/Containers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find app folders there that belong to deleted programs, you can remove them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-icloud-speicher-aktiv-nutzen\">Actively use iCloud storage<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>macOS can automatically move rarely used files to iCloud to free up local space:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to System Preferences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select Apple Account &gt; iCloud &gt; Drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable the \u201cOptimize Mac Storage\u201d feature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>macOS then automatically stores older files in the cloud and continues to display them in the Finder. They are downloaded only when needed\u2014ideal for saving space without sacrificing content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apfelpatient.de\/en\/tips-tricks\/extend-iphone-battery-life-these-7-tips-help-immediately\">Extend iPhone battery life: These 7 tips help immediately<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ordnergrossen-im-finder-anzeigen-mit-einschrankungen\">Show folder sizes in Finder (with restrictions)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to find out which folders are taking up the most space on your MacBook, you can display their sizes in the Finder \u2013 but only under certain conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open Finder and navigate to a folder you want to check (e.g. your home folder)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you have the list view enabled (three-line icon in the Finder toolbar)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press Command (\u2318) + J to open the display options<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the box \u201cCalculate all sizes\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>macOS now displays the sizes of the folders it contains in a separate column\u2014but only in this one folder window. This setting isn&#039;t global; you&#039;ll need to enable it manually for each folder if you want to see the folder sizes there. Also, depending on the folder contents, calculating the sizes may take a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you need a comprehensive overview of large files and memory hogs across your entire system, the integrated storage management under System Preferences &gt; General &gt; Storage is usually much more efficient.
