With each new generation, Apple has added new health functions, sensors, and software features. A model with an integrated camera was planned for 2027\u2014a technological leap that would have opened up entirely new application possibilities. But Apple unexpectedly canceled the project. What&#039;s behind this decision? And what developments are Apple making instead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-was-genau-geplant-war\">What exactly was planned<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple developed various prototypes of the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra with built-in cameras. These cameras weren&#039;t intended for FaceTime or taking traditional photos. Instead, they were designed to feature features you might already be familiar with from the iPhone&#039;s visual intelligence. The idea was that the Apple Watch&#039;s camera would provide you with information about your surroundings. For example, you could:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be able to check the opening hours of a shop or restaurant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognize plants or identify objects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get translations in real time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get descriptions of objects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The camera would have functioned as a visual analysis tool\u2014not for communication, but for information. This would have turned the Apple Watch into an even smarter assistant, providing you with context quickly and discreetly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-projektstopp-das-ist-bekannt\">Project stop: This is known<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-05-22\/apple-plans-glasses-for-2026-as-part-of-ai-push-nixes-watch-with-camera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Bloomberg,<\/a> Apple stopped development of these Apple Watch models in the week the report was published. This applies to both the standard models and the more robust Apple Watch Ultra. No official reason for the cancellation was given. It&#039;s also unclear whether Apple has permanently discontinued the project or whether the idea will return in a modified form at some point. There are concrete indications of new developments, especially with the AirPods. Apple is developing AirPods with tiny cameras. These are likely infrared cameras, not intended for traditional image capture, but for new functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Better spatial awareness and 3D audio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gesture control through hand movements in the air<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support for AI-based context functions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The sensors are designed to help detect your surroundings and, in combination with other devices, create an immersive experience.
