Since its launch, it has not only generated attention, but also tension behind the scenes. What began as a strategic partnership with Goldman Sachs is now evolving into open competition between the world&#039;s largest payment networks. Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are currently vying for the position behind the Apple Card. A lot of money and strategic influence are at stake\u2014and possibly even new features for you as a user.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you use the Apple Card or are generally interested in mobile payments, you should pay close attention now. Apple is currently facing major decisions. The current collaboration with Goldman Sachs is shaky, and several banks and network providers are looking to get involved in the project. What&#039;s been going on internally so far has been made public by a report in the Wall Street Journal. The details demonstrate how serious the battle over the Apple Card has become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-goldman-sachs-will-raus-aus-dem-deal\">Goldman Sachs wants out of the deal<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Goldman Sachs is currently the bank behind Apple Card. Mastercard provides the payment network through which payments are processed. However, it has been clear for some time that Goldman Sachs is not making any profits from Apple Card\u2014in fact, the bank has apparently lost billions of dollars on the partnership. According to information in the report, Goldman Sachs has been actively trying to end its collaboration with Apple since at least November 2023. This means that Apple not only has to find a new bank but also decide which payment network it will use in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apfelpatient.de\/en\/news\/the-future-of-the-apple-card-goldman-sachs-goes\">The future of the Apple Card: Goldman Sachs goes<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-visa-macht-ein-hohes-angebot\">Visa makes a high offer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Visa is among the companies vying for the role of a new payment network. According to the report, Visa has made Apple an &quot;aggressive offer.&quot; Part of this offer includes an upfront payment of $100 million. Such upfront payments are typically only common with the largest card programs. Visa wants to send a clear message and demonstrate how important the deal is to them. If Apple accepts the offer, Visa could replace Mastercard as a network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-american-express-verfolgt-eine-doppelstrategie\">American Express pursues a dual strategy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>American Express is also in the running. Unlike Visa, however, Amex not only wants to provide the payment network, but also assume the role of issuing bank. This means that American Express wants to replace both Goldman Sachs and Mastercard. This would make Amex responsible for the entire Apple Card infrastructure. The advantage for Apple would be a simplified structure \u2013 but it remains to be seen whether Apple truly wants to take this step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mastercard-kampft-um-den-verbleib\">Mastercard fights to stay<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mastercard is currently the existing network behind Apple Card. But competition is putting Mastercard under pressure. The report states that Mastercard is &quot;desperately&quot; trying to continue its collaboration with Apple. One measure to remain attractive is the possible integration of Finicity. This is a platform that allows users, with their consent, to integrate their bank accounts directly into the Apple ecosystem. This could allow account balances to be displayed in the Wallet app, for example. Whether this step is enough to convince Apple remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-banken-misstrauen-apple-wollen-aber-trotzdem-mitspielen\">Banks distrust Apple \u2013 but still want to play along<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The relationship between major banks and Apple is complicated. Many institutions are skeptical of Apple&#039;s financial plans because they see Apple as a potential competitor. At the same time, they know that the Apple Card offers enormous potential\u2014both in terms of access to customer data and revenue. Therefore, several banks are currently vying to replace Goldman Sachs. Among the contenders are Synchrony, Chase, Capital One, and American Express (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/finance\/banking\/apple-card-visa-mastercard-deal-3ce762da\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">WSJ<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-warum-das-alles-wichtig-ist\">Why all this is important<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For Apple, it&#039;s not just about keeping the Apple Card running. The company wants to further expand its payment ecosystem. The network that wins the contract could also play a key role in future Apple payment services. That&#039;s why the current competition is so intense.
