A flood of notifications is distracting, reduces concentration, and makes it easy to miss important things. Apple Intelligence intervenes in three ways: It summarizes notifications, prioritizes the most urgent ones, and filters out everything unimportant at the right moment. This way, it's no longer the app that decides when your iPhone interrupts, but the actual content.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These features are part of Apple Intelligence and work directly within the Notification Center and Focus system of iPhone and iPad. Three components work together: \"Summarize Notifications\" condenses long or stacked notifications, \"Prioritize Notifications\" moves the most urgent ones to the top, and the \"Reduce Interruptions\" focus allows only what deserves immediate attention to pass through. This requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone (iPhone 15 Pro or later) or iPad with a current operating system version and Apple Intelligence enabled<\/a>. Apple Intelligence is enabled by default in iOS 27; in iOS 26, it must first be activated via the central switch \u2013 the following settings are located in the same place in both versions. These features are available in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summarize messages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In particularly active group chats or long message chains, Apple Intelligence condenses the content into a short summary, allowing you to grasp the key points at a glance. Summarized messages appear in italics; tapping them expands them back to the full view. This feature can be enabled for individual apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here's how to activate summaries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Open the settings and tap on "Notifications".<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Tap on "Summarize notifications" and activate the option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Tap on \"Select notifications for summary\" and specify which apps should be summarized.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Because Apple Intelligence relies on generative models, results may vary \u2013 for important details, it's recommended to refer to the original message. Individual apps can be removed at any time by toggling the switch next to the respective app in the notification settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Important announcements first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Beyond simply summarizing notifications, the iPhone recognizes which notifications are most urgent and displays them at the top of the notification stack \u2013 preventing missed notifications from getting pushed to the bottom of the list. Prioritization can be activated under "Settings" \u2192 "Notifications" \u2192 "Prioritize Notifications." Here, too, a list determines which apps are prioritized. When a prioritized notification appears, it can be adjusted directly from the lock screen: swipe left, tap "Options," and turn off or completely disable prioritization for that app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The focus is on \"reducing interruptions\"<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This focus goes a step further: Instead of just sorting, it actively filters out everything that isn't immediately important. Apple Intelligence reads the content of notifications and only allows through what requires immediate attention - such as a last-minute change to the daycare pick-up time - while less urgent messages are silenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Here's how to set it up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Open \"Settings\" \u2192 \"Focus\".<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Tap the plus symbol in the top right corner and select "Reduce interruptions".<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Tap on \"Adjust focus\" and then on \"People\" or \"Apps\" to specify who and which apps should still send you notifications.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      For example, you can set it so that calendar, family and work team can always get through, while social media apps remain silent for the duration of the focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Intelligent passthrough in every focus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Intelligent filtering isn't limited to \"Reduce Interruptions.\" The \"Smart Forwarding and Muting\" setting is automatically enabled in this focus, but can also be turned on for any other focus - such as \"Work,\" \"Sleep,\" or \"Personal.\" When active, Apple Intelligence decides which notifications are forwarded and which are muted within the respective focus. Manually allowed or muted notifications remain unaffected and are always handled accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Requirements and accuracy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      These features require an Apple Intelligence-enabled device: iPhone 15 Pro and later, as well as iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models, and compatible iPad models with Apple Silicon. Siri and the device language must be set to the same supported language, and Apple Intelligence must be enabled. Because generative models are used, summaries and classifications may occasionally be inaccurate - especially with dates, numbers, or names, it's worth checking the original message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Content matters, not the app<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Summarizing, prioritizing, and the \"Reduce Interruptions\" focus shift control over the notification flow back to the user: No longer does each app determine when the iPhone interrupts, but rather the actual content. Combining these three features results in a noticeably quieter lock screen without missing anything important. Apple Intelligence also uses the same principle to condense longer messages in the Mail app<\/a> and entire web pages in Safari<\/a> \u2013 anywhere a lot of text needs to be quickly digestible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
