The EU's Digital Markets Act, passed in 2022, originally imposed certain restrictions on gatekeeper services such as the App Store and messaging platforms. Apple initially confirmed that iMessage fell under this definition. However, the company later retracted its statement, arguing that iMessage was not used enough in Europe to meet the criteria for gatekeeper status.
