During WWDC 2022, Apple unveiled iPadOS 16 with an enhanced multitasking system for M1 iPads, full support for external displays, and new collaboration tools.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple used the WWDC keynote to announce the latest operating system updates for its flagship products, such as iPadOS for the iPad, to announce<\/a>. Many of the new features from iOS 16 have been carried over into iPadOS 16, along with some important changes specific to Apple's tablet line. A key new feature in iPadOS 16 is collaboration in apps using technologies like SharePlay and FaceTime. Users can open documents in apps like Pages and interact live with others in a FaceTime group call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iPadOS 16 brings Stage Manager on board<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With Stage Manager, Apple brings overlapping windows and advanced multitasking to iPads with M1 processors. Connect the iPad to an external display and run up to eight apps at the same time. This multitasking system sets new standards for the iPad and enables completely new interactions between apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional features of iOS 16<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Weather app comes to iPad with a large-screen design. Developers also get access to an API called WeatherKit. The lock screen has been redesigned on iPhone and iPad and is now more personalizable. You can edit the lock screen with new clock styles, add widgets, and receive enhanced notifications from apps. Focus modes can also affect what is shown on the lock screen. Create multiple lock screens based on activity or app and have them automatically switch based on your current focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple improves the SharePlay experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Focus is also being improved across the operating system with third-party APIs that let you specify what content is shown in an app. For example, only certain email accounts can be shown in the Mail app, depending on which focus is currently active. The Messages app has also been updated, allowing you to edit an iMessage after sending it, or delete it entirely from a chat. SharePlay has also been integrated into Messages, allowing users to view content together and chat about it in text form. Continuity updates include a new FaceTime feature that lets users transfer a FaceTime call between devices. Apple has updated several of its first-party apps with new developer APIs. One of the biggest updates is Apple Maps, with APIs for adding detailed maps and Look Around to third-party apps. The update will be released alongside iOS 16 and Co. this fall.
