Rumor has it that Apple is working on its own 5G modem, which is expected to debut in the iPhone 2023 lineup.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Taiwanese news site DigiTimes has published a new paid report published<\/a>, claiming that 2022 will be the last year that Qualcomm supplies all modems for the iPhone models. Starting in 2023, iPhones are expected to come with 5G baseband modem chips designed by Apple itself. The 5G modem Apple has developed for the 2023 iPhone models is said to be independent of its A-series chip, tentatively called "A17."<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TSMC, the Taiwanese company that currently supplies all of Apple's custom SoCs, is believed to be preparing to supply Apple with its new 5G baseband modem. At its annual general meeting earlier this week, Qualcomm said that the company expects to supply only 20 percent of modem chips to Apple in 2023, suggesting that Apple will provide up to 80 percent of the 5G modem chips needed for iPhones itself from 2023. It is believed that Apple began working on its own modem chips with the acquisition of Intel's modem chip business in 2019 in order to permanently break away from Qualcomm.
