The combination of the size and the flat sides basically requires a box to hold it more easily, making the whole thing even bigger. It's still workable but it's on the verge of being too big. I think the size reflects the wider choice: This year, Apple is making more phone sizes available than ever before, including the tiny iPhone 12 mini, so it had the opportunity to push the Max even further.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In the process, The Verge also describes the camera system as \u201cthe best smartphone camera yet\u201d with the potential to become even more powerful when Apple introduces its ProRAW format:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all, the combination of a larger sensor, faster lens, improved stabilization, LIDAR, and processing power means the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the best smartphone camera I've ever used - it produces great, colorful photos with excellent detail in lighting situations where other phones start to struggle. We've seen this year Android phone makers like Samsung and Huawei use much larger sensors with a variety of complicated techniques to make them work, but Apple's approach of pairing a moderate jump in sensor size with a focus on improved processing has kept it in the lead. I'm intrigued by Apple's new ProRAW format, which promises the editing flexibility of RAW images from that sensor with the processing of Smart HDR... but it's not out yet, so we'll have to wait.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

All three things work together to produce pretty brilliant imaging results. It also makes the camera bump on the iPhone 12 Pro Max a bit higher. High enough that there's actually an extra lip on the body provided by Apple to cover it. In it, we play a 4K video on a loop with the brightness set to 50% and the volume set to 30% while the device is in airplane mode and play the video on a loop until the battery dies.
