Apple Maps can also be used offline – handy when you're on the go and don't have internet access. You can download specific map sections directly to your iPhone and access them anytime, whether you're in a dead zone or don't want to use mobile data while abroad. This not only saves data but also ensures you reach your destination safely. Here's step-by-step instructions on how to set up Apple Maps for offline use.
Offline maps are especially useful for travel, excursions, or longer hikes. Especially outside of the city, mobile network coverage can be weak or even completely lost. With downloaded maps in Apple Maps, you're prepared for such situations. This is also helpful abroad, as it allows you to avoid roaming charges. Setup only takes a few minutes and is worthwhile for anyone who wants to navigate independently of the network while on the go.
Select map section
Launch the Apple Maps app and search for the location or region you want to save offline. For example, you can display a city, a nature reserve, or an entire area. Zoom in on the map so that all important streets, paths, and locations are in view. The more precise your selection, the better your navigation will be later. It's a good idea to include neighboring areas as well, in case you're moving a bit away from your original destination.
Download map
Once you've accessed the desired area, tap the field with the place name or address at the bottom. A menu will open with various options, including "Load." Select this option. You can accept the suggested section or adjust the frame manually. Then confirm with "Download." The map section will be saved to your device. The download runs in the background, so you don't need to leave the app open.
Control storage space
Depending on their size, offline maps can take up several hundred megabytes. To avoid download issues, you should check how much free space is left on your iPhone beforehand. To do this, go to Settings, then "General," then "iPhone Storage." Here you can see how much space is being used and what you can delete to free up space. If you're running low on space, delete old files, unused apps, or completed downloads.
Use offline maps
When you lose an internet connection, Apple Maps automatically accesses your downloaded maps. This means you can search for locations, view routes, and navigate even when you're in airplane mode or without reception. The app shows you streets, attractions, restaurants, and other POIs within the saved area. Simply tap "Route" as usual to start directions. Navigation also works offline with voice prompts and lane tracking.
Update or delete maps
Offline maps become outdated over time. New roads, construction sites, or route changes are only reflected online. To keep your maps up-to-date, go to Settings, then "Maps," and then "Offline Maps." Here, you can update individual map sections. If you no longer need the maps, for example, after a trip, you can delete them with a swipe to the left. This frees up space on your device.
Apple Maps works even without reception
With offline maps in Apple Maps, you're more flexible on the go. Whether you're abroad, hiking, or traveling – you don't need an internet connection to get to your destination. Setup is quick and saves you time and stress in an emergency. Download the most important map areas to your iPhone now and use Apple Maps whenever and wherever you want – even offline.
